China News Alert

Officials issue Yellow alert for thick fog in northern China December 9; transportation disruptions likely

TIMEFRAME expected from 12/9/2019, 12:00 AM until 12/11/2019, 11:59 PM (Asia/Shanghai). COUNTRY/REGION China, Beijing, Hebei, Henan,, Shandong province

The Chinese National Meteorological Center (CNMC) issued on Sunday, December 8, a Yellow fog alert (the first level on a three-point scale) in the north of the country, in areas between the Yellow River and the Huaihe River. The alert is expected to remain in effect through at least all of Tuesday, December 10.

As of Sunday morning (local time), the visibility was reportedly reduced to less than 200 meters (650 ft) in Beijing, Hebei, Henan and Shandong. Related transportation disruptions (rail, road, and air) are likley in the coming hours and days.

Individuals in affected provinces are advised to monitor local weather forecasts, prepare for lingering transportation disruptions, and confirm flight and train reservations. Due to health risks associated with air pollution, it is advisable to limit outdoor activities. Pollution is especially hazardous to vulnerable individuals (e.g. children, seniors, pregnant women, and individuals suffering from asthma and other respiratory issues). If experiencing breathing difficulties, seek medical attention, particularly if new symptoms appear (e.g. cough, sore throat, irritated eyes).
