At least nine people were injured following a 5.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Neijiang City (Sichuan province) on Wednesday, December 18. More than 2000 rescue officials are carrying out rescue operations in the area as of 11:30 (local time) on Wednesday. Local media outlets have also reported some infrastructural damage. Transportation, business, and power disruptions are anticipated in the coming hours.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the quake at 08:14 at approximately 29.63°N 104.94°E at a depth of 10 km (6 mi). No tsunami warning was immediately issued. Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.
Individuals in the region are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate transportation business disruptions and power outages, and prepare for potential aftershocks.
In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
