Significant infrastructural damages have been reported in southeast England as of Friday, December 20, as a result of recent heavy rains and associated floods. The M23 has been closed between junctions 10 and 11 in both directions in West Sussex. Passengers using Southern, Thameslink, and Gatwick Express railways have been advised not to travel, as inclement weather conditions have resulted in severe disruptions to rail services on those lines. According to Southern Railway, major disruptions are expected until at least 14:00 (local time). Residual disruptions are possible throughout the day. Further information can be found on the Southern website here.
Additional rain is expected in the coming hours and days, possibly resulting in further transportation disruptions, hazardous driving conditions, and power outages.
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions including train delays and cancelations, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
