Nigeria News Alert

Protests are possible in Abuja on December 23 amid new hearing of opposition activist Sowore; heightened security presence expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 12/23/2019, 12:00 AM until 12/24/2019, 11:59 PM (Africa/Lagos). COUNTRY/REGION Nigeria, Abuja

Event

Supporters of prominent protest leader and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore are likely to stage protests in front of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, December 23, as a new hearing over the release of Sowore is set to take place.

Associated transportation disruptions and a heightened security presence are to be expected in the vicinity of the protest. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

Sowore was arrested by Department of State Services officers in Lagos on August 3, ahead of a planned August 5 mass protests under the title "#RevolutionNow" to demand greater democracy and governance. He has been charged with treason and money laundering.

Advice

Individuals in Abuja are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests due to the risk of violence, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.

The security environment in Nigeria is complex and is particularly challenging in the northeast and extreme south of the country due to the presence of armed groups, high crime rates, and the risk of kidnapping. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel to such areas.
