Yemen: At least eight dead due to swine flu (H1N1 virus) December 21

Yemen News Alert

Health officials confirm eight deaths due to swine flue (H1N1 virus) on December 21; ensure H1N1 vaccination is up-to-date and practise good personal hygiene

TIMEFRAME expected from 12/21/2019, 12:00 AM until 1/31/2020, 11:59 PM (Asia/Kuwait). COUNTRY/REGION Yemen

A public health official confirmed the deaths of eight people in Sana'a on Saturday, December 21, due to swine flu (H1N1 virus). The official also announced 43 related deaths out of 6600 cases reported in 2019, of which 1600 cases were reported in the last two months. However, opposition activists accuse Houthi authorities, particularly in the capital, of misleading and minimizing information indicating the seriousness of the epidemic. They report approximately 346 swine flu-related deaths in the capital alone as of Sunday, December 15.

Influenza is a contagious virus that can spread from human to human. Symptoms include high fever, aching muscles, headache, and respiratory issues. Particularly vulnerable individuals include young children, elderly persons, pregnant women, and individuals suffering from chronic diseases. A seasonal vaccine is available.

Individuals are advised to take preventive measures to minimize the risk of contracting or spreading the disease, including frequent handwashing and/or use of antibacterial gel, sneezing and coughing into one's elbow, avoiding contact with individuals presenting flu-like symptoms (as well as avoiding contact with others when ill), and seeking medical attention in the event of a fever over 38°C (100°F), severe coughing, and sore throat or difficulty breathing.
