Algeria: Protests planned nationwide April 26

Student protesters have started gathering in downtown Algiers for the 44th consecutive week of protests as of Tuesday, December 24, to demand fundamental changes to their political system. The protest is being held amid three-days of national mourning announced on Monday, December 23, following the death of the Army Chief Ahmed Gaid Salah.

Associated protests are possible in other urban centers across the country.

A heightened security presence and associated disruptions (e.g. transportation, commercial, internet service) are likely during any protests. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

Protests to denounce the current political system have continued despite the election of Abdelmadjid Tebboune on December 12.

Individuals in Algiers and across Algeria are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and anticipate a heightened security presence and localized disruptions to business and transportation around protest sites.
