“Noo Lank” civil society group to organize protests against increased electricity price in Thiès, Louga, Kolda, Pikine, and Guediewaye, December 27, 29

TIMEFRAME expected from 12/27/2019, 12:00 AM until 1/10/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Dakar). COUNTRY/REGION Thiès, Louga, Kolda, Pikine, Guediawaye, Thiès

The Noo Lank civil society group has called for protests in several cities across the country on Friday, December 27, and Sunday, December 29, to denounce the increased price of electricity and demand the release of an activist arrested on Friday, November 29, in a related protest. On Friday, protests are expected in Thiès, Louga, and Kolda, while on Sunday, protesters will gather in Guediewaye and Pikine. Authorities have reportedly issued a ban on all protests, however, gatherings remain likely.

A related nationwide protest has been called for Friday, January 10, 2020.

A heightened security presence and localised transportation disruption are to be expected near any demonstration sites. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Related protests have been held in Dakar on December 13, 20. On December 20, security forces used tear gas to disperse the crowds as authorities had banned the protest.

Individuals in Louga, Kolda, Pikine, Thiès and Guediewaye are advised to monitor developments of the situation, avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
