On Thursday, December 26, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared victory in a vote to decide leadership of the Likud party. Prime Minister Netanyahu won 72.5 percent of the vote over challenger Gideon Saar, who only secured 27.5 percent. The prime minister will go on to the general election, which is set to take place in March.

On November 21, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was indicted on charges of fraud, breach of trust, and bribery. Netanyahu, who had denied any wrongdoing, will not be required to resign from his current post. Netanyahu is currently serving as caretaker prime minister after both he and political rival Benny Gantz failed to form a coalition government following a September election.
