Members of the "Sardine" movement have called for protests in several cities between Saturday, December 28, and Sunday, January 19. On December 28, participants plan to gather in Canicattì (Sicily region) at the Piazza Dante at 19:30 (local time). On Sunday, December 29, activists are due to meet at Piazza della Rinascita in Baronissi (Campania region). On Saturday, January 4, supporters plan to meet at 18:30 at Piazza della Spirito Santo in Pistoia (Tuscany region). On the same day, activists plan to also gather at 19:00 in Trapani's (Sicily region) Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. "Sardine" activists have called for a protest in Bologna (Emilia-Romagna region) on January 19, however, organizers did not immediately announce an exact meeting time or location.

A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are expected near all protest sites. Related protests are possible in urban centers across the country in the coming days and weeks. Clashes with Lega Nord-supporting counter-protesters cannot be ruled out.

In recent weeks, thousands of people have been gathering across Italy in sign of opposition to far-right leader Matteo Salvini.

Individuals in Italy are advised to avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate localized business and transportation disruptions near protest sites, and obey instructions issued by the local authorities.
