Event

More than 10,000 people have registered for a "Run Against Dictatorship" rally in Bangkok scheduled for Sunday, January 12. Participants are expected to gather at Wachirabenchathat Park between 05:30 and 9:00 (local time) to voice their opposition to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, who was elected in March amid allegations of irregularities. Chan-o-cha seized control of the country in 2014 after leading a military coup.

A counterdemonstration in support of the prime minister will be held on the same day; some 2500 people are expected to participate.

A heightened security presence along with localized transportation and business disruptions are anticipated near all demonstration sites. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Individuals in Bangkok are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
