Kenya News Alert

Kenya Meteorological Department officials warn of higher rainfall in western and central parts of the country during early January, increasing the risk of flooding

Event

The director of the Kenya Meteorological Department warned on Thursday, January 2, that above average rainfall is expected in some parts of the country during the first two weeks of January, increasing the risk of flooding. According to current predictions, episodes of heavy rainfall will impact western and central counties, including Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Nandi, Laikipia, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, and Kakamega. Weather officials said that the heaviest rainfall will likely occur in the afternoons and at night.

Landslides, transportation and business disruptions, and damage to infrastructure and crops are anticipated in the event of flooding.

Advice

Individuals in Kenya are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
