According to police sources, at least 19 people were killed in an attack by gunmen in the Tawari community in Kogi State on Friday, January 3. Eye witnesses reported around 100 gunmen approaching the village on Thursday, January 2, at 23:45 (local time). The attack lasted until the early morning hours on Friday.

Further attacks are likely in Kogi state over the near term.


Kogi state is located in the central region of Nigeria, where a number of militant groups, including Boko Haram, are active. Though Nigerian military forces have pushed insurgents from much of their previously claimed territory, attacks have been on the rise since June 2017.
