The Dominican Republic’s Minister of Defense, Rubén Paulino Sem, announced on Tuesday, December 31, that an additional 1200 security personnel have been deployed to the border with Haiti. According to Sem, the deployment was ordered to reinforce efforts to prevent smuggling, drug trafficking, illegal immigration during the holiday season, and to protect the environment. Additional checkpoints, security patrols, and other heightened measures are expected to be in place along the border over the near term.
Individuals in the Dominican Republic are advised to anticipate an increased security presence along border regions, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, and minimize movement at or near land borders when possible.
