Libya News Alert

Airstrike at military college in Tripoli kills at least 28 people on January 4; Mitiga International Airport (MJI) closed as of January 5

TIMEFRAME expected from 1/4/2020, 12:00 AM until 1/5/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Tripoli). COUNTRY/REGION Libya

An airstrike hit a "military college" in Tripoli's Hadba al-Khadra area, south of the city center, on Saturday, January 4, killing at least 28 people and wounding dozens of others. The airstrike reportedly may have been carried out by forces loyal to Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, head of the Libyan National Army (LNA). Multiple indirect fire (IDF) impacts have also been reported at Mitiga International Airport (MJI) since Friday, January 3; the airport remains closed as of Sunday, January 5.

Further fighting is to be expected in and around Tripoli over the near term.

The Libyan National Army (LNA) launched an offensive on Tripoli on April 4, 2019, and prompted evacuations of foreigners from Tripoli on April 7, 2019. LNA and Government of National Accord (GNA) airstrikes have been sporadically reported since April 8, 2019. The bulk of recent fighting has been concentrated in the southern suburbs of the capital.

Individuals in Tripoli and those traveling via Mitiga International Airport (MJI) are advised to monitor the situation, confirm flight reservations, avoid areas affected by fighting, maintain safe and current evacuation plans, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Libya remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
