The president of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) announced on Friday, January 3, that presidential and parliamentary elections will be held on Sunday, May 3.

Political rallies and protests are anticipated in the lead up to and following the results of the elections; a heightened security presence and associated traffic disruptions are to be anticipated at polling stations and near any demonstrations.

Former President Morales resigned on November 10 following weeks of protests organized by opposition political organizations. The TSE was accused of manipulating the results of the October 20 election in favor of Morales to prevent a runoff, sparking an escalation in demonstrations nationwide. More than 30 people have been killed in clashes with security forces or between rival political supporters.

Individuals in Bolivia are advised to monitor the situation, avoid public political demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate localized disruptions on May 3, and adhere to all instructions by local authorities and their home governments.
