Bolivia News Alert

Plurinational State Day to be observed across Bolivia January 22; protests and commercial disruptions possible

TIMEFRAME expected from 1/8/2020, 12:00 AM until 1/22/2020, 11:59 PM (America/La_Paz). COUNTRY/REGION Bolivia

Plurinational State Day is a public holiday that will be observed across Bolivia on Wednesday, January 22. The government announced that it will stay open during the holiday, when Interim President Jeanine Áñez is expected to give a management report on government activities.

Protests are possible in urban centers across Bolivia, particularly in La Paz, on January 22. Business disruptions are to be expected in observance of the holiday.

Plurinational State Day was established as a public holiday in 2010 by Former President Evo Morales to celebrate the adoption of a new constitution and change in the name of the country.

Former President Morales resigned on November 10 following weeks of protests organized by opposition political organizations. The TSE was accused of manipulating the results of the October 20 election in favor of Morales to prevent a runoff, sparking an escalation in demonstrations nationwide. More than 30 people have been killed in clashes with security forces or between rival political supporters

Individuals in Bolivia are advised to monitor the situation, avoid demonstrations and large gatherings as a precaution, anticipate commercial disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
