The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has called for a march in Lilongwe on Thursday, January 9, to demand justice for the police officers it alleges to have sexually assaulted several women in Msundwe. Participants plan to gather from 08:00 (local time) at the Lilongwe community ground and then march to the Malawi Police Service Headquarters Area 30, via Kamuzu procession road (M1), Paul Kagame road, and Area 18 roundabout. Organizers have called on supporters to dress in red, white, and black.

A heightened security presence along with overland travel disruption are to be expected along the march route.

The HDRC organized a similar march on December 27, 2019, to denounce sexual violence.

Individuals in Lilongwe are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests and public gatherings, anticipate transportation disruptions and a heightened security presence around demonstration sites, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
