Poland News Alert

Civil society groups call for a demonstration in Warsaw over judicial reform on January 11; heightened security measures and localized transportation disruptions expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 1/10/2020, 12:00 AM until 1/11/2020, 11:59 PM (Europe/Warsaw). COUNTRY/REGION Poland

Several civil society groups have called for a march in Warsaw on Saturday, January 11, to denounce the ruling party's judicial reforms that would grant government the power to fire or fine judges. Participants plan to gather at 15:00 (local time) at the Supreme Court before marching through the Presidential palace and Parliament.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expect along the march route.

Poland's ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party has vowed to keep reforming its justice system after winning the parliamentary election in October. The new laws would give the government the power to fire or fine judges expressing opposing views to that of the government.

Individuals in Poland are advised to monitor developments, avoid all demonstrations, anticipate transportation disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
