At least 93 people were killed nationwide between Monday, January 13, and Wednesday, January 15, in avalanches and landslides triggered by inclement weather. Most incidents have been reported in Balochistan, Punjab, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, where avalanches have killed at least 66 people and injured 53 others in the Neelum Valley. Rescue operations are still ongoing as of Wednesday, as several areas remained inaccessible following heavy snowfall.
Severe transportation disruptions have been reported nationwide, including on major highways.
Further flooding, landslides, avalanches, and power outages are likely in the affected regions over the coming days, as well as associated transportation and business disruptions.
Individuals in Pakistan are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions and flight reservations before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
