The National Weather Service (NWS) issued an advisory at 14:36 (EST time) on Wednesday, January 15, forecasting a powerful winter storm to impact the Northwest on Thursday, January 16, before passing across the Plains into the Midwest by Friday, January 17. The NWS expects the storm to bring heavy snow and ice in some areas, as well as heavy rain for the coastal ranges of Washington, Oregon, and central to northern California states. Weather officials also warned of transportation disruptions over the central US by Friday night due to slippery roads and poor visibility from freezing rain and heavy snow.
