Nigeria News Alert

The Yoruba World Congress calls for a rally in all southwest states January 21; a heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 1/21/2020, 12:00 AM until 1/21/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Lagos). COUNTRY/REGION Nigeria

Event

The Yoruba World Congress has called for a rally under the name "Amotekun Solidarity Walk" to take place in all southwestern states on Tuesday, January 21, to support Operation Amotekun, a recently created security network to quell insecurity across the region. Participants plan to simultaneously gather at 09:00 (local time) in Lagos, Abeokuta, Ibadan, Osogbo, Akure, and Ado-Ekiti.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected in the area over the coming hours. Clashes between protesters and security forces are possible.

Advice

Individuals in the abovementionned areas are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests due to the risk of violence, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.

The security environment in Nigeria is complex and is particularly challenging in the northeast and extreme south of the country due to the presence of armed groups, high crime rates, and the risk of kidnapping. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel to such areas.
