At least three people were killed in violent clashes in Labé January 23; further protests likely in the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 1/24/2020, 12:00 AM until 1/26/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Conakry). COUNTRY/REGION Guinea, Labé, Guinea

According to the city's mayor, violent clashes between protesters and police forces occurred in Labé on Thursday, January 23, amid anti-government protests. At least three people were killed and several wounded in the process.

Tension remains high in the area as of Friday, January 24, and further incidents cannot be ruled out throughout the day as the three victims are likely to be buried on Friday.

Further protests are likely across the country on the near term. A heightened security presence and transportation disruptions are to be expected in the vicinity of any demonstrations. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Several opposition demonstrations have been organised across the country since October 14, some of which have turned violent. Opposition members allege that President Condé, who has been in power since 2010, is positioning himself to change the constitution in order to allow him to run for a third presidential term in late 2020. President Condé publicly called for a constitutional referendum on December 19.

Individuals in Guinea, notably in Labé and the capital Conakry, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests due to the risk of violence, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
