Heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding that have affected Madagascar since Sunday, January 19, have killed 31 people and left 15 others missing as of Sunday, January 26. Infrastructure damage has been reported, including damages to roads. The districts of Mitsinjo and Maevatanana have been the most severely affected. At least 107,000 people have been displaced nationwide due to the flooding.

Associated disruptions, including transportation disruptions, infrastructure damages, and power outages, are likely in the affected areas over the coming days.  


Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
