Event

Armed militants attacked the village of Bilibiza (Cabo Delgado province) at approximately 20:00 (local time) on Wednesday, January 29, setting its technical college on fire. Most residents fled before the group reached the village after hearing gunfire nearby; no casualties have been reported as of Thursday, January 30. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

A heightened security presence is expected in the vicinity of the attack over the coming days. Similar attacks are likely in Cabo Delgado over the near term.

Context

Ahlu Sunna Wa-Jamo/Ansar Al-Sunna (Al-Shabaab) is believed to be responsible for carrying out attacks against local businesses, government installations, and security forces in Cabo Delgado province since October 2017. The Islamic State group has also claimed to be active in the province and alleged that its militants carried out the group's first attack in Mocímboa da Praia district in June 2019.
