As of Wednesday, February 5, clashes have been reported on Iyanan-Ipaja-Idimu road, located in the Alimosho Local Government Area (LGA) of Lagos state between operators of commercial motorcycles and tricycles, and security forces, as they protest recent transportation legislation. According to local reports, bonfires have been lit along major roadways in the area.
A heightened security presence and transportation disruptions are to be expected in the vicinity of the clashes over the coming hours. Further protests and related clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
Authorities announced a ban on commercial motorbikes throughout most of Lagos effective from February 1. Officials cited the need to reduce overcrowding and the toll of fatal accidents in the city.
Individuals in Lagos state are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests due to the risk of violence, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
The security environment in Nigeria is complex and is particularly challenging in the northeast and extreme south of the country due to the presence of armed groups, high crime rates, and the risk of kidnapping. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel to such areas.
