Teachers and education workers in Guerrero state plan to protest on February 7; heightened police presence and localized traffic disruptions expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 2/6/2020, 12:00 AM until 2/7/2020, 11:59 PM (America/Mexico_City). COUNTRY/REGION Guerrero state

Event

The State Coordinator of Education Workers of Guerrero (CETEG) is calling on teachers and education workers in Guerrero state to strike on Friday, February 7, to demand talks with the Guerrero Ministry of Education (SEG). A regional march is expected to take place on Friday and associated rallies are possible throughout the state. CETEG leaders have warned that they will begin organizing staggered strikes starting at 24 hours, then increasing to 48 and 72 hours, until the SEG meets with them.

Further protests are possible over the coming days if the union’s demands are not met. A heightened police presence and localized traffic disruptions are expected around all rallies and marches.

Context

The CETEG claims that the Secretary of Education has failed to meet their concerns or implement necessary reforms. Union demands include salary rescheduling, improving working conditions, incorporating teachers into the Fund for Contributions to the Educational Payroll (Fone), and a review of the teacher evaluation process, among other issues.

Advice

Individuals in Guerrero state are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution, monitor the situation, allow ample travel time, and obey instructions issued by the local authorities.
