Afghanistan News Alert

Casualties reported amid suspected insider attack in Nangarhar province February 8; similar incidents possible over the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 2/8/2020, 12:00 AM until 2/8/2020, 11:59 PM (Asia/Kabul). COUNTRY/REGION Nangahar province

US and Afghan forces came under direct fire while conducting a joint operation in Nangarhar province on Saturday, February 8. Initial reports indicate multiple casualties, though officials have yet to confirm. It remains unclear whether the attack was carried out by the Taliban or any other military group. The Taliban have not claimed responsibility for the incident as of early (local time) Sunday, February 9.

Similar incidents are possible in Nangarhar province and across Afghanistan in the near term.

Taliban militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country and to gain leverage amid ongoing peace negotiations.

Individuals in Nangarhar province are advised to monitor developments, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas, other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
