6.2-magnitude earthquake strikes off the east coast of New Britain on February 9; no tsunami warning immediately issued

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 6.2-magnitude earthquake off the east coast of New Britain at approximately 16:04 (local time) on Sunday, February 9. According to initial reports, the quake hit at a depth of about 31 km (19 mi) about 123 km (77 mi) south of Kokopo. No tsunami warning was immediately issued.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.


Individuals in the affected area are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
