Storm Ciara hits nationwide with gale-force winds February 10-11, western Austria under red alert, eastern Austria under orange alert; heavy rain, storm surge, and associated disruptions expected

In the morning (local time) on Monday, February 10, Storm Ciara (Sabine) hit Austria with gusts of well over 100 kph (62 mph) and thunderstorms, and will continue through Tuesday, February 11. Dangerous winds and heavy rain are expected, with extreme danger (red) warnings issued throughout the western Alpine regions. Less severe orange alerts have also been issued in the eastern part of the country. Winds are expected to reach hurricane levels in mountainous areas.

Austrian Airlines has reported that flight cancelations to and from Vienna International Airport (VIE) are a possibility.

Associated transportation disruptions, including flight and train delays and cancelations, are to be expected over the coming hours and days.
