Algeria: Protests planned nationwide April 26

Event

Thousands gathered in Algiers on Friday, February 14, for the 52nd consecutive week of student-run anti-government protests. The demonstration reportedly went off peacefully amid a heightened security presence.

Further protests are likely in Algiers over the near term. A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected in the vicinity of any demonstration.

Context

Protests to denounce the current political system have continued despite the election of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on December 12. Participants sustained demands for civil and popular sovereignty, still rejecting the recent presidential electoral process. The protest movement has been ongoing since February 16, 2019.

Advice

Individuals in Algiers are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and anticipate a heightened security presence and localized disruptions to business and transportation around protest sites.
