Parliamentary speaker confirms elections are due on April 12, after parliament dissolves itself; political rallies expected in the coming months

The Speaker of Parliament confirmed that elections will take place on Sunday, April 12, after parliament dissolved itself on Sunday, February 16. The decision was supported by 108 deputies in the 120-seat parliament and follows after the resignation of Prime Minister Zoran Zaev in early January. 

Political rallies are likely in the lead up to the elections. A heightened security presence is expected at any election-related event.

Context

Former Prime Minister Zoran Zaev resigned on January 3 after the European Union failed to give North Macedonia a date to begin talks to join the bloc. An interim government, led by Interior Minister Oliver Spasovski, took over.
