Mortar shells land near Mogadishu Airport (MGQ) February 17; flight disruptions and a heightened security presence expected over the coming hours

Event

According to local sources, one mortar round landed in the International Camp within Aden Adde International Airport (MGQ), while another one struck the UN camp on Monday, February 17, at around 14:24 (local time). Both mortal shells failed to detonate. The firing point has been reported in the adjacent Wadajir district where three to four shots were reportedly fired. Details are still emerging.

Flight disruptions (e.g. delays and cancelations) are possible at MGQ over the coming hours along an heightened security presence.

Context

Al-Shabaab continues to exercise effective control over large zones in the south and center of Somalia and attacks from the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the West- and UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.
