Security forces are investigating an explosion in Rosas municipality (Cauca department) that occurred on the night (local time) of Monday, February 17. According to initial reports, an explosive device detonated inside of a vehicle, killing at least five people. Local media claim that the device was intended to target a military checkpoint in the area but may have prematurely detonated, killing the occupants of the van. Several other people were reportedly wounded in the blast and are being treated at nearby hospitals. Details are still emerging.
A heightened security presence is anticipated around the area of the explosion over the coming hours.
Individuals in Cauca department are advised to keep abreast of the situation, avoid the area of the incident, anticipate localized disruptions and a heightened security presence, and obey all instructions issued by the local authorities.
Due to the presence of a number of armed groups - including organized crime groups, drug cartels, right-wing militias, and local gangs, in addition to the ELN - some Western governments advise against travel to various parts of the country.
