Nigeria News Alert

Police extend curfew in Bayelsa state to February 23; heightened security presence expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 2/19/2020, 12:00 AM until 2/23/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Lagos). COUNTRY/REGION Nigeria

On Monday, February 17, the commissioner of police announced that an overnight curfew in Bayelsa state will continue through Sunday, February 23. Under the extension, curfew hours are from 22:00 to 06:00 (local time). The curfew was originally imposed on Friday, February 14, after violent protests erupted in response to a supreme court ruling that nullified the state's recent gubernatorial election.

A heightened security presence is expected in the area over the coming days. Further extensions to the curfew cannot be ruled out.

Individuals in Bayelsa state are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate a heightened security presence, avoid any potential protest or demonstration as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.

The security environment in Nigeria is complex and is particularly challenging in the northeast and extreme south of the country due to the presence of armed groups, high crime rates, and the risk of kidnapping. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel to such areas.
