Afghanistan: Imminent threat reported in Kabul March 20

Afghanistan News Alert

Local sources warn of an imminent attack in Kabul March 20; heightened security presence expected in the capital

TIMEFRAME expected from 3/20/2020, 12:00 AM until 3/23/2020, 11:59 PM (Asia/Kabul). COUNTRY/REGION Afghanistan

Event

According to local sources, anti-government militants are planning to launch a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) attack or a suicide attack against a hotel located in Kabul's Wazir Akbar Khan district. Separately, the same source indicates that there is an increased risk of hostile militants kidnapping foreign citizens in Afghanistan.

A heightened security presence is expected in the capital over the coming hours and days.

Context

Taliban and Islamic State (IS) militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF), and the Afghan government more broadly, to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country.

Advice

Individuals in Kabul are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel. .
