Suspected suicide bombing in Mogadishu kills and wounds multiple people on March 25; heightened security presence expected over the coming hours

TIMEFRAME expected from 3/25/2020, 12:00 AM until 3/25/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Mogadishu). COUNTRY/REGION Mogadishu

A suspected suicide bomber killed and wounded multiple people in an attack in Mogadishu on Wednesday, March 25. According to local sources, the blast occurred at a cafe in the vicinity of Sayidka Junction near the Federal Parliament of Somalia. The area has since been evacuated, and security forces have deployed to the site of the attack. Al-Shabaab reportedly claimed responsibility for the bombing.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are expected in the area over the coming hours.

Al-Shabaab continues to exercise effective control over large zones in the south and center of Somalia and attacks from the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the West- and UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.

Individuals in Somalia are advised to remain vigilant for militant activity and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Somalia remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
