Event

A roadside bomb detonated on the outskirts of Garbaharey in Gedo region on Tuesday, March 31, killing at least two Ethiopian soldiers and wounding a further four people, including soldiers and civilians. According to local sources, the blast from the improvised explosive device (IED) targeted a convey of Ethiopian troops of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). The Al-Shabaab militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Context

The Al-Shabaab militant group continues to exercise effective control over large zones in Somalia and attacks form the group are frequent across the country. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the West and UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.
