Weather officials issue red wind warnings (highest level) for Velebit channel on April 1; damaging winds and associated disruptions possible

The Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service (DHMZ) has issued red weather warnings (the highest on a four-tier scale) for the Velebit channel on Wednesday, April 1. Strong gale force winds with gust up to 65-130 kph (40-80 mph) are forecast along the channel. Hazardous maritime conditions are expected and there is a significant risk of coastal infrastructure damage. The DHMZ was advised the public to avoid traveling in the area as a precaution. An orange warning (the second highest) has also been issued for Rijeka region on Wednesday until 18:00 (local time).

Related transportation disruptions, including to ferry service, hazardous driving conditions, and power outages are possible over the coming hours.


Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, prepare for transportation disruptions (including road closures) and power outages, confirm travel itineraries, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
