At least 11 people were injured during clashes in Mbuji-Mayi (Kasaï-Oriental) on Wednesday, April 1, after security forces attempted to break up an altercation with public sector repair workers. Fighting reportedly broke out at the intersection of Kalonji and Kalambayi Nzevu avenues, in the commune of Muya after Regideso workers attempted to repair a leak in a main water pipe that residents were using to wash cars and earn a living from. Police officers eventually used tear gas to disperse the crowd; seven officers and four Regideso workers were injured in the violence.

A heightened security presence is to be expected over the coming days. Further clashes cannot be ruled out.

Individuals in Kasaï-Oriental are advised to monitor developments to the situation, anticipate a heightened security presence, refrain from nonessential movement in areas affected by the clashes, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
