On Monday, April 6, police forces reportedly blocked access to some public spaces including a bridge crossing the Dnipro River in Kiev, prompting discontent among the public. The incident comes just after the government reinforced domestic restrictions to prevent further spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Individuals gathered in front of the police to denounce the measures, stating that the domestic restrictions in place violated their freedom of movement. Following the incident, at least two individuals were arrested by the police.
A heightened security presence is to be anticipated in Kiev and other urban centers while the domestic restrictions remain in place.
The implementation of domestic restrictive measures due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has already triggered tensions in Ukraine. Previously, in mid-February dozens of people protested, and some clashed with police in Poltava Oblast over plans to quarantine evacuees from China.
Individuals in Ukraine, notably in urban centers, are advised to monitor developments relating to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
