Niger: Clashes in Tillaberi displace thousands April 11

Niger News Alert

Clashes in Inates area (Tillaberi region) displace thousands as of April 11; further unrest expected in near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 4/14/2020, 12:00 AM until 4/16/2020, 11:59 PM (Africa/Niamey). COUNTRY/REGION Niger, Niger

According to media sources, clashes between security forces and unidentified armed militants have been reported in the Inates area (Tillaberi region), located near the border with Mali, on Saturday, April 11. As a result, more than 8000 people have been forcibly displaced towards the Ayorou and Dessa areas.

A heightened security presence is expected in the area over the coming days.

Niger faces a high threat from terrorism, including armed attacks and abductions. Militant Islamist cells from various Nigerian and Malian terrorist groups - including Boko Haram, Al-Qa'ida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO), and Al-Mourabitoun - are all active in the country, notably in the Diffa, Tahoua, and Tillaberi regions, leading to a continued insecurity in these areas.

Individuals in the Tillaberi region are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments. The security environment in Niger remains complex and professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
