Suspected Israeli airstrikes targeted military positions near Palmyra (Homs province) on Monday, April 20. The airstrikes were reportedly partially intercepted by Syrian air defense systems and damage reports are currently unknown as of Monday evening (local time). Similar strikes in the region have recently targeted Hezbollah and Iranian militants, who are known to operate in the area. Israel did not immediately comment on the incident.
The Israeli military has struck more than 200 targets in Syria over the past two years, many of which have been arms depots and military facilities allegedly receiving arms and fighters from Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah group.
Due to extremely poor security conditions, Western governments generally advise against all travel to Syria, with some banning travel to the country. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to any travel.
