Suspected Mai-Mai militants killed three members of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) in an attack on the Muchacha mining site in Mambasa territory (Ituri province) on Saturday morning (local time), May 2. Militants launched the attack at approximately 05:30 and were met by FARDC forces; the fighting lasted for several hours. A FARDC spokesperson stated that a full assessment will be carried out to determine exact casualty numbers.

Similar attacks are possible in the region over the near term.

The government's limited presence in the DRC's eastern provinces, as well as the presence of numerous armed groups and local self-defense militias, has led to continued insecurity in the area.

Individuals in Ituri province are advised to remain vigilant for militant activity, monitor developments to the situation, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
