Venezuelan security forces killed eight armed individuals on speedboats who attempted to land near the city of La Guaira (Vargas state) on Sunday, May 3. Venezuelan officials described the individuals as "terrorist mercenaries" who had entered from Colombia. Security forces recovered a number of automatic weapons from the scene and detained at least two individuals. Authorities stated that they believe that the individuals had intended to carry out acts of terrorism against government targets; however, opposition figures claimed that the event had been staged. Security forces closed the main road running through Macuto and introduced traffic restrictions on the Caracas-La Guaira highway.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Local security operations were ongoing as of Sunday. Similar security operations are possible in Venezuela over the near term.
Individuals in Vargas state are advised to monitor developments and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
