Brazil News Alert

Individuals gather in Brasilia to show support for President Bolsonaro on May 3; heightened security presence reported

TIMEFRAME expected from 5/4/2020, 12:00 AM until 5/7/2020, 11:59 PM (America/Sao_Paulo). COUNTRY/REGION Brasília

Individuals in Brasilia gathered on Sunday, May 3, to show support for President Jair Bolsonaro as tensions rise over ex-minister Sergio Moro and the Supreme Court. Participants were concentrated near the Esplanada dos Ministérios, where President Bolsonaro himself later made an appearance. The protest took place despite an increase in the number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases reported nationwide. Bolsonaro has been a critic of social distancing and isolation measures throughout the pandemic. Four journalists were injured as a result of clashes with counter-protesters.

A heightened security presence was reported at the scene. Associated protests cannot be ruled out over the coming days.

Individuals in Brasilia are advised to monitor the situation and expect a heightened security presence and transportation disruptions should additional protests take place.
