Event

As of Sunday, May 3, around 600 residents in the Long Bemang area in Baram district (Sarawak state) have been affected by severe flooding. Heavy rainfall began in the area on Saturday night (local time), May 2, and inundated around 100 dwellings. All residents were at home due to the current movement control order (MCO) in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Emergency services have been deployed to the area to aid those affected. Inclement weather recorded in the region over the past week has left a number of local roads impassable.

Further rainfall is forecast in Baram district over the coming days which may cause consequent flooding and associated disruptions to transportation and business in affected areas.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions, anticipate transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
