Myanmar News Alert

Health officials issue high alert for dengue fever in Mandalay region May 3; take precautions against mosquitos

TIMEFRAME expected from 5/5/2020, 12:00 AM until 5/31/2020, 11:59 PM (Asia/Rangoon). COUNTRY/REGION Myanmar, Mandalay

Event

Health officials in the Mandalay region issued a high alert for a dengue fever on Sunday, May 3, with Myingyan and Chanmyatharsi township having reported the highest transmission rate of the virus in the region. Authorities warned that the risk of getting bitten by mosquitos is higher because more people are staying at home due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic and associated lockdown measures.

As of May 3, there have been 296 dengue fever cases and no associated fatalities in the Mandalay region between January and April of this year.

Context

Symptoms of dengue fever include fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, fatigue, nausea, and rashes. Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is a potentially deadly complication that is characterized by high fever, the enlargement of the liver, and hemorrhaging.

Advice

Individuals in the Mandalay region, and Myanmar more generally, are advised to take measures to protect themselves from mosquito bites - e.g. by wearing covering clothing, using insect repellent, and sleeping under mosquito netting or in an air-conditioned room - and to eliminate possible mosquito breeding grounds (e.g. small pockets of freshwater, such as rainwater that has collected in cans, bottles, tires, flowerpots, clogged gutters, etc.).
