4.6-magnitude strikes near Tehran on May 8, killing at least one person and injuring several others; aftershocks possible

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 4.6-magnitude earthquake near Damavand around 00:48 (local time) on Friday, May 8. According to the USGS, the quake hit at a depth of 10 km (6 mi) and tremors were felt in Tehran, about 55 km (34 mi) east of the epicenter. At least one person was killed and seven others injured in Tehran, while residents fled into the streets and parks. No significant damage to buildings or infrastructure was immediately reported.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected areas over the coming hours and days.


Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks. In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
