Suspected militants wounded six civilians in an attack on a passenger bus along the National Road Number 1 (EN1) in Mutindiri (Sofala province) on Monday morning (local time), May 11. Security forces were deployed to the scene and cordon was put in place to allow investigations to take place. The militants were thought to be from the Mozambique National Resistance (Renamo) group.
Similar militant attacks in Sofala province are possible in the coming days and weeks.
In August 2019, the Peace and National Reconciliation Agreement was signed between President Filipe Nyusi and Renamo leader Ossufo Momade which called for the immediate disarmament and reintegration into society of more than 5000 Renamo rebels. The agreement also intended to allow for greater political participation for Renamo members; however, due to a lack of opportunity to obtain some share of political power, elements of Renamo have continued their violent attacks.
Individuals in Sofala province are advised to remain vigilant, report any suspicious objects or behavior, and follow all instructions issued by the local authorities.
