6.4-magnitude earthquake strikes west of Tonopah (Nevada state) May 15; no immediate reports of damage or casualties

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 6.4-magnitude earthquake approximately 57 km (35 mi) west-northwest of Tonopah (Nevada state) on Friday, May 15. According to initial reports, the quake hit at 04:03 (local time) at a depth of 7.6 km (4.75 mi). No damage or associated disruption was immediately reported in the area.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected areas over the coming hours and days.


Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
